For those of you who may not know me very well, I spent two years working and living in Italy after I graduated from university. Since moving back to the states, I’ve always had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to be able to work there someday. Come to think of it, there are places all over the world where I’ve either wanted to visit or wanted to work.

About a month ago, I went to a conference in New York where Steve Rubel discussed this idea and gave it a name: digital nomad.

I’ll be honest here, I have this pipe dream of doing my work on a laptop while sipping Lavazza espresso in Florence’s Piazza della Repubblica — free to go and do whatever I like, whenever I like. As of yet, I don’t have the means or the guts to pull it off.

So here are my questions:

  1. Are you currently in a job where, if you had the permission of your boss, you could work anywhere in the world with a laptop and a high speed Internet connection?
  2. If not, what is it about your job that makes it impossible?
  3. Would you become a digital nomad if given the opportunity?
